General Statement of Job
Under direction of the Director of the Institute, the Director of Authorization serves as the champion of the organization’s mission and vision implementation in attracting, sourcing, and recommending high-quality charter schools, representing the department and the Institute as the sponsor of choice in South Carolina.
This position is also responsible for maintaining transparency in oversight and monitoring of charter school performance, accountability, and contract compliance, initiating intervention as necessary and required by the South Carolina Charter Act, state law, federal law, and/or Institute policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Director of Authorization
- Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Institute leadership, the South Carolina Department of Education, legislatures, and community stakeholders to support the strategic initiatives of the Institute and the charter school movement.
- Establish and cultivate relationships and alliances with community leaders, national educational organizations, state legislature, and school choice advocates to develop and sustain a pipeline of quality charters.
- Serve as content and subject matter expert of South Carolina charter law, policies, procedures, best practices, and legal requirements as they pertain to charter school authorization and oversight.
- Partner with leadership in creating policies, procedures, and standards that encourage innovation, promote autonomy, and maintain accountability for charter schools.
- Advocate for quality education, equity, and school choice for all students, families, and communities in South Carolina, with a commitment to provide opportunities for the underserved and underrepresented.
- Oversee and monitor charter authorization, renewal, and replication cycles, keeping leadership apprised of each cycle’s process status and all major developments.
- Develop streamlined application processes and procedures, continually refining and recommending process improvements for new school recruitment, training, and evaluation.
- Monitor and direct charter school performance and compliance, alerting and recommending leadership of initiation of interventions to include corrective actions, sanctions, and/or revocation of a charter as necessary.
- Conduct research and perform outreach to external organizations and entities that may potentially impact the educational landscape with academic success through high-quality educational curriculums, proven processes, efficient charter school management, and financial stability.
- Assess and analyze the Institute and its school portfolio’s impact on the educational landscape and progression towards strategic goals and mission fulfillment, recommending and implementing changes and tactics to foster improvement.
- Manage and supervise the Authorization Department staff and others as assigned in a professional and respectful manner, ensuring work is efficiently and satisfactorily completed in alignment with Institute standards.
- Perform other authorization-related duties as assigned by the Superintendent and/or Director of the Institute.
Additional Role Requirements
- Occasional statewide travel will be required for this role, including school site visits, planning meetings, in-person community presentations, local and national conferences, training, etc. Overnight stays may be required.

Background, Experience and Education
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited educational institution required.
- Teaching experience required.
- Policy development and writing experience.
- Experience planning and leading strategic initiatives preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
- High degree of flexibility.
