Salary Details:
This role is also eligible for a 13-15% performance bonus based on individual and organizational performance and goal attainment. LSC also offers a relocation stipend to defray the cost for individuals hired (if applicable). Director of Finance - LSC's Network Team
Organization Background: Liberty STEAM Charter School will operate three campuses in the 2025-26 school year and serve 900 scholars in grades K-5 with an aggressive growth plan to serve 2,061 scholars across four campuses by July 2029. Reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED), the Managing Director Finance (MDF) serves as a senior administrator at LSC. The ideal candidate is an experienced public education finance professional, especially committed to serving low SES and minority scholars, self-reflective, data-driven, results-oriented, mission-focused, open to and actively seeks constructive feedback, and is tenacious about scholar college & career readiness.
The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing the financial operations of Liberty STEAM Charter School, ensuring sound financial management practices, and helping drive the mission of the organization through the effective use of resources. This leadership role will manage budgeting, accounting, reporting, compliance, and financial planning while collaborating with executive leadership to ensure the long-term financial health and sustainability of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting
Oversee and manage all aspects of accounting and financial operations, including budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow needs, and forecasting.
Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and relevant stakeholders.
Ensure accurate and timely preparation of the annual audit and the Form 990 tax return.
Present to Executive Director audit firm candidates and your recommendation.
Manage cash flow, ensuring adequate liquidity for operations and identifying areas for cost reduction and efficiency improvement.
Budgeting & Financial Planning
Lead the budgeting process, in collaboration with other departments, to create the organization’s annual budget and multi-year financial projections.
Monitor budget performance throughout the year, identifying variances and implementing corrective actions when necessary.
Analyze financial data and trends to provide strategic insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including maintaining proper accounting records and adhering to Liberty Financial Policy Manual and accounting standards (e.g., GAAP, FASB guidelines).
Ensure timely filing of financial documents, including 990 forms, and other regulatory requirements.
Act as the main liaison with auditors and ensure proper documentation is in place for annual audits and reviews.
Grants, Federal Programs, & Fundraising Support
Oversee financial reporting for grants and restricted funds, ensuring that all expenses are in compliance with grant terms and conditions.
Work closely with the Development team to track donations, pledges, and financial gifts, ensuring proper documentation and use of funds.
Provide financial analysis and reporting for fundraising campaigns and other revenue-generating activities.
Provide tax documents to donors in compliance with IRS guidelines.
Work closely with Quixote Foundation and support their philanthropic support of LSCS.
Leadership & Team Management
Lead and mentor the finance team, providing guidance, training, and professional development opportunities.
Foster a collaborative work environment and ensure high performance and accountability across all financial operations.
Strategic Planning & Financial Sustainability
Assist the Executive Director and Board of Directors in shaping the organization’s financial strategy, ensuring alignment with the mission and long-term goals.
Identify and implement strategies for sustainable financial growth, ensuring the organization remains financially healthy and can scale operations as needed.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in finance, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably in a non-profit or school district.
Strong knowledge of school district accounting principles, financial regulations, and reporting requirements. Experience in Smart Fusion, preferred.
Proven experience in financial planning, budgeting, and managing complex financial systems.
Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and manage a diverse team.
Ability to communicate financial information effectively to non-financial stakeholders, including the Board of Directors and senior leadership.
Skills & Competencies
High level of proficiency in financial software (e.g., Smart Fusion, Microsoft Excel, etc.). Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in financial reporting. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
